Harbor Springs, Michigan – The Soo Night Hawks travel baseball team opened its inaugural season with a double header in Harbor Springs Michigan on Saturday April 23 against the Harbor Springs Varsity Baseball Team; the first game went two extra innings and resulted with a hard fought 10 to 9 loss, the Night Hawks responded in game 2 taking home a solid 8 to 4 victory.
Zach Duchesne got the Night Hawks season off to a solid start with 3 innings of two run ball. Offensively Braeden Whalen led the way scoring two runs, while Austin Hurley contributed two runs batted in. Brandon Boyer, Tyler Sayers, and Brennan Mitchell also had hits in the loss.
In game two the pitching was very solid Braeden Whalen picked up the victory with 4 innings of 4 run ball while striking out 7 batters and Brennan Mitchell closed out the game with 2 solid shutout innings. Offensively the team was led by Whalen helping his own cause with a 2 for 3 effort with 3 runs scored and 2 RBI’s, while Mitchell contributed 2 for 3 with a double. Also contributing offensively with a double and 2 runs batted in was Joe Maclean. Cole Wright and Noah O’Brien also had hits in the victory.
Head Coach Steve Hurley added “For the teams first time outside on a baseball field this season, facing a team that had already played 6 games, the team competed very well. Both games were hard fought and the team stayed strong throughout. It was a good opportunity to work in some of the new younger players.”
