TRAFFIC STOP LEADS TO SEIZURE OF CURRENCY AND DRUGS

(TOWNSHIP OF THE NORTH SHORE, ON) – On May 17, 2016, members of the East Algoma Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) were on regular patrol duties in the Township of the North Shore, east of Blind River.

At 4:01 p.m., police were stationary on Highway 17 and observed an eastbound vehicle travelling at a high rate of speed.  As the vehicle passed the stationary cruiser, the officer observed one male occupant with four windows down in the vehicle.

A traffic stop was initiated.  As a result of the investigation, Sault Ste. Marie OPP K-9 was called to assist East Algoma officers with a search of the vehicle.  Officers located a large amount of currency in a vacuum sealed bag and over 175 grams of cocaine.

John S. CHONG, 50 years of age, from CALEDON, Ontario, was charged with:

  • Possession of Schedule 1 Substance for the Purpose of Trafficking-Cocaine, contrary to section 5(2) of the Controlled Drugs Substances Act;
  • Possession of Schedule 1 Substance – Cocaine, contrary to section 4(1) of the Controlled Drugs Substances Act; and
  • Possession of Property Obtained by Crime over $5000-in Canada, contrary to section 354(1)(a) of the Criminal Code.

The accused is scheduled to appear before the Ontario Court of Justice – Bail Court in Sault Ste. Marie on May 19, 2016.

SPEEDER CHARGED WITH DRUGS

(TOWNSHIP OF THE NORTH SHORE, ON) – On May 17, 2016, members of the East Algoma Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) were on regular patrol duties in the Township of the North Shore, east of Blind River.

At 10:52 a.m., police observed a westbound vehicle on Highway 17 travelling at a high rate of speed.  A traffic stop was initiated.  Police observed Cannabis Marihuana in the vehicle.

As a result, Lee-Ann MCCHESNEY, 36 years of age, from Calgary, Alberta was charged with:

  • Possession of Schedule II Substance-Cannabis Marihuana-Under 30 grams, contrary to section 4(1) of the Controlled Drugs and Substances Act; and
  • Speeding, contrary to section 128 of the Highway Traffic Act.

The accused is scheduled to appear the Ontario Court of Justice in Blind River on July 7, 2016.

OWNER CHARGED WITH NO INSURANCE

(BLIND RIVER, ON) – On May 17, 2016, members of the East Algoma Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) were on regular patrol duties on Highway 17 west of Blind River.

At 13:24 p.m., police observed an eastbound vehicle on Highway 17.  A traffic stop was initiated.  As a result of the investigation, the vehicle was found not to be insured.  The vehicle was towed.

Constantin VOICA, 40 years of age, from Toronto, Ontario, was charged with:

  • Owner Permit Operation of a Motor Vehicle on a Highway – No Insurance, contrary to section 2(1)(b) of the Compulsory Automobile Insurance Act.

The accused is scheduled to appear before the Ontario Court of Justice in Blind River on July 6, 2016

DRIVER CHARGED – NO INSURANCE

(ELLIOT LAKE, ON) – On May 16, 2016, Members of the East Algoma Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) were on regular patrol duties in the City of Elliot Lake.

At 11:20 a.m., police observed a vehicle on Hillside Drive South with an expired validation tag.  A traffic stop was initiated.  As a result of the investigation the vehicle was found not to be insured and was towed.

William WOOLLEY, 54 years of age, from Elliot Lake, Ontario, was charged with:

  • Operate Motor Vehicle on a Highway – No Insurance, contrary to section 2(1)(a) of the Compulsory Automobile Insurance  Act; and
  • Drive Motor Vehicle – No Currently Validated Permit, contrary to section 7(1)(a) of the Highway Traffic Act.

The accused is scheduled to appear before the Ontario Court of Justice in Elliot Lake on July 20, 2016.
