Regional Artists Express Variations of Time for Third 5×7 Art Show

SAULT STE. MARIE, Mich. – A reception has launched a showing of more than 90 5×7 canvases donated by Michigan and Ontario artists to be in Lake Superior State University’s Arts Center gallery through May 27.

The April 22 reception opened the third annual 5×7 Art Show, a juried competition cosponsored by LSSU and Chippewa County Sunrise Rotary Club. Patrons viewed and purchased original works to benefit LSSU Arts Center Gallery exhibition programming and Rotary’s earmarked designation in support of a sidewalk project for the Robert and Helen Ball Hospice House in Sault Ste. Marie, Mich. 2016’s theme was, Time. This program also featured food and friendship accompanied by the beautiful music of live piano and cello.

Taking first-place honors and receiving $300 was Gail Stanek, Norway, Mich., for her oil, It’s Not Who, It’s When; second place with a prize of $200 went to April South-Olson, Escanaba, Mich., for her work in encaustic, Hourglass Meadow; third place with a prize of $100 was given to LSSU student Andrew Grossmann, Gobles, Mich., for his acrylic Story of My Life. Rob Bowen, Brimley, Mich., took honorable mention for the oil, Witness to the Effects, as did Susan Johnson, Sault Ste. Marie, Mich., for her mixed media, Counting Time in Squares. Stefanie Moran, Sault Ste. Marie, Mich., rounded out honorable mentions with A Lifetime in Pebeo Vitrail paint.

Pieces, each available for purchase for $50, are in the Arts Center gallery 12-4 p.m. Tuesday, Thursday, and Friday; 12-6 p.m. Wednesday.
