A homeowner in the Central downtown area sent a video to saultonline that captures a door-to-door sales person on Thursday, May 19th in the late afternoon. Prior to the video beginning, the homeowner told saultonline, “He told my son he needed to speak with the homeowner. ‘We need to mark you off of our list.’ “. Her son was confused, but also suspicious, as he made it sound like he was there on official business.
Eco Energy Home Solutions was in the McGregor Ave area on Thursday morning (May 19th). A woman who lives on McGregor, and had an Eco Energy Home Services representative at the door told saultonline that she ended up calling the police. She said that, “Concerns for neighbours compelled me to inquire about any potential risks. He was determined to get into the house. He asked me two or three times if he should remove his shoes inside or outside the front porch. I had to keep telling him that we weren’t interested. My concern was for neighbours that might get confused by the questions he was asking, and sign a contract that they will come to regret. The police told me they would ‘send a car out to the area’.”
Saultonline spoke with Sault Ste. Marie Police Services, Sergeant Bolduc. “We are aware of them (Eco Energy Home Services) being in Sault Ste. Marie. We have received calls about them. They’re in town for approximately one week. We’re getting calls about people complaining about aggressive sales tactics. We have spoken to their Regional Manager, and addressed the concerns. We are continuing to monitor them.”

BBB files indicate that this business has a pattern of complaints concerning misleading sales practices. Consumer complaints allege that door to door sales persons are misleading consumers, providing false information and using high pressure sales tactics.
The BBB would like to urge consumers to keep in mind the following when it comes to door-to-door sales and home service contracts:
The Consumer Protection Act (administered by The Ministry of Government & Consumer Services) gives you special rights when you buy something in your home that costs more than $50:
– As a consumer, you have the right to cancel a contract for any reason within a 10-day cooling-off period. For water heater contracts, there is a 20-day cooling-off period.
– You must be given a written contract which includes specific information about the goods or service. It must also outline your rights as a consumer. If it doesn’t, you can cancel the contract within 1 year of signing.’
