When there’s a potential scammer at your door

A homeowner in the Central downtown area sent a video to saultonline that captures a door-to-door sales person on Thursday, May 19th in the late afternoon. Prior to the video beginning, the homeowner told saultonline, “He told my son he needed to speak with the homeowner. ‘We need to mark you off of our list.’ “. Her son was confused, but also suspicious, as he made it sound like he was there on official business.

Eco Energy Home Solutions was in the McGregor Ave area on Thursday morning (May 19th). A woman who lives on McGregor, and had an Eco Energy Home Services representative at the door  told saultonline that she ended up calling the police.  She said that, “Concerns for neighbours compelled me to inquire about any potential risks.  He was determined to get into the house. He asked me two or three times if he should remove his shoes inside or outside the front porch. I had to keep telling him that we weren’t interested. My concern was for neighbours that might get confused by the questions he was asking, and sign a contract that they will come to regret. The police told me they would ‘send a car out to the area’.”

Saultonline spoke with Sault Ste. Marie Police Services, Sergeant Bolduc. “We are aware of them (Eco Energy Home Services) being in Sault Ste. Marie. We have received calls about them. They’re in town for approximately one week. We’re getting calls about people complaining about aggressive sales tactics. We have spoken to their Regional Manager, and addressed the concerns. We are continuing to monitor them.”

BBB files indicate that this business has a pattern of complaints concerning misleading sales practices. Consumer complaints allege that door to door sales persons are misleading consumers, providing false information and using high pressure sales tactics.

The BBB would like to urge consumers to keep in mind the following when it comes to door-to-door sales and home service contracts:

The Consumer Protection Act (administered by The Ministry of Government & Consumer Services) gives you special rights when you buy something in your home that costs more than $50:

– As a consumer, you have the right to cancel a contract for any reason within a 10-day cooling-off period. For water heater contracts, there is a 20-day cooling-off period.

– You must be given a written contract which includes specific information about the goods or service. It must also outline your rights as a consumer. If it doesn’t, you can cancel the contract within 1 year of signing.’

For additional information about your rights at the door, the ‘Ontario Consumer Protection Act’ can be found here: https://www.ontario.ca

  1. I seen these people thursday at the sleep inn on Bay St they were spread between two vehicles. One was a higher end Lexus and the other was a higher end AMG Mercedes.

  2. I have a dog I keep for people such as this. I feel for any seniors or anyone recovering from illness, injury, or surgery, who opens the door to this. No one should be harassed in their homes.

  3. get them down here in Southern Ontario also they try to get you to believe that they are legal and need to check the furnace and ventilation …very pushy..I just tell them to get lost and shut the door… I might be getting old but I am not stupid..

  4. I am one of the unfortunate people who got reeled in and have filed a complaint with the BBB. They basically told me my furnace was outdated and it was the law that I had to replace it. They had 4 non English speaking men at my house by 8:30 the next day to install and I hadn’t even confirmed it by phone. They have breached their contract and I wish I could get out of it. I won’t even tell you what I pay monthly and will not be able to sell my house till I pay it outright. What a fool I was.

  5. They’re in the State Streets right now. Very pushy. When I told them I was going to call Union Gas and verify that they were sent to my house by them, they left in a hurry. This is twice scammers have used the excuse that a flyer was sent out by Union Gas and if I didn’t receive it it’s because I get paperless billing.

  6. They where in p patch yesterday. Glad I was at my mom’s home when they showed up. Very pushy . Wanted to get inside for sure. Problem is my mom is 80. There is got to be a way to stop this.

    • They were at my house today.. ppatch..threatened to call cops too. Very pushy!!! Wanted to come in and look at my furnace and my bill.. def wasn’t letting that happen.. friggen idiots.

  7. I have had these same guys at my door. I have told them they have no right to be here and that what your doing is wrong Do not give these guys any info

  8. Can they in fact be labelled scammers when they are conducting business legally?
They may be able to sue you for calling them scammers.
FLEECERS or GOUGERS sounds more appropriate, you know, like McGouger Fuels.
