Will the Sault get the 2018 Winter Games?

Not since 2000 has the Ontario Winter Games been in Sault Ste. Marie. Will 2018 be our year?

The hosting grant is $900,000 from the Ministry of Torism in Ontario.

What will it bring to the community:

  • 2,700 to 3,500 participants
  • 22 to 27 sports
  • 12,000 visitor nights
  • $6-million economic impact

This will be said to also develop a volunteer base in our community.

The bid document is over 100 pages and has to be submitted tomorrow to the ministry.

It will have one full-time staff to assist in administration if we do get the bid so as to not tax the city staff further.

The revenue projections are as follows:

  • $900,000 operating grant
  • $200,000 in registration fees
  • $150,000 from the city
  • $50,000 from tourism Sault Ste. Marie
  • $75,000 in sponsorship
  • $100,000 in provincial support
  • $5,000 in merchandising

Two events that cannot be hosted is 5-pin bowling and wheelchair curling.
