Black Sox Victorious over Newberry

The Soo Junior-Midget Black Sox bested Newberry in a 9-5 victory this past Wednesday, June 22nd. This marked yet another home field victory for the Soo. The game provided a good chance to showcase the pitching staff of the Sox, who rotated 8 different pitchers over the 9 inning contest.

The Black Sox weren’t afraid to flash the leather in this match. The third inning featured center fielder Connor Henderson in full pursuit of a right-center line drive, completing an outstretched diving catch. Fellow shortstop Colton Read answered with some superb defense of his own in the fifth inning. With one out and a man on first base, Newberry attempted a hit and run. Read laid out on an up-the-middle line shot, stabbing the ball in the air. He landed, and then completed the doubled play by firing across to first base while still sitting on the ground.

Though the gloves were capable, it’s the offense which is truly this team’s bread and butter. The Sox picked up 8 hits through the contest, led by the bats of Colton Read’s 3-for-5 and Jordan Trudeau’s 1-for-2 with 3 walks. Noah Thomson, Jared Pine, Liam Riley, and Connor Henderson also picked up hits. This is the eighth time this season the Sox have scored 9 or more runs in a game.

The Sox credit much of their offense to youthful hitting coach, Jordan Pine. Pine, a Black Sox alumni, currently plays at Canada’s top baseball college, St. Clair College. St. Clair, located in Windsor Ontario, has won 3 straight gold medals at the OCAA Provincial College Baseball Championships in their 2013, 2014 and 2015 seasons.  Jordan, who was best known for his outfield range and sweet power swing, will be providing the tips and methods gained from his experience at St. Clair to the Black Sox lineup.

Some other highlights in the match included: a strike-em-out throw-em-out play by the combination of pitcher Noah Thomson and catcher Carter Magee in the second inning, and a 5 pitch scoreless inning for pitcher Jordan Trudeau in the fifth inning.

The Black Sox will face Newberry once again on July 11th to conclude the home and home series.
