The 2016 Open League season opener took place June 9th as the Superior Auto Group Hellcats hosted the Tigers at the Dodge Ram Field at Sinclair Yards. This is the first adult baseball game Sault Ste. Marie has seen since 2007.
The Hellcats took a 1-0 lead in the first inning. The Tigers tied it up in the top second before the Hellcats regained the lead in the bottom of the second making it 2-1. In the bottom of the third and fourth inning, the Hellcats hit it into gear scoring 12 runs while pressuring the Tigers with no choice but to score in the top of the fifth to stay alive. The Tigers scored 5 runs in the top of the fifth to stay alive making it 14-6. In the bottom of the sixth, the Hellcats were unstoppable as they scored three more runs to mercy the Tigers in the season opener 17-6.
Brad Lefave got the win for the Hellcats. Ashley Hopf, Greg Lefave and Cory Lelievre also came in as relief. Combined, the Hellcats pitching staff struck out 14. The Tigers losing pitcher was Adam Carricato with help from Mike DiDonato and Chris Myers. Carricato struck out two while Myers struck out one.
Leading the offense for the Hellcats was Greg Lefave, Cory Lelievre, Tim Lelievre, Pat Koski, Noah Brule and Ashley Hopf. For the Tigers, Jeff Mills, Drew Fata, Steve Turco and Marcus Moore got the team’s only four hits.
Next Open League action at Dodge Ram field is on Sunday, June 12 at 8:30pm as the Tigers host the Red Sox. The four team Open League games take place at the Dodge Ram field at Sinclair Yards on Thursdays and Sundays 8:30pm under the lights.
