Seniors Calling. The 29th Annual Senior Games BBQ Kick-Off Celebration

Over 70 senior citizens from The Sault gathered at The Bay St. Seniors Drop-In Centre to officially kick-off The 29th Annual Senior Games. This fun-filled week of activity is part of The City of Sault Ste. Marie Senior Services, Recreation and Culture Annual celebration, which coincides with ‘Seniors Month’. Each June, the Province of Ontario designates the entire month as “Senior’s Month”

20160606_121106Catherine Mallinger, city of Sault summer student, works in partnership with The Senior Games Committee to coordinate the variety of events that take place at several different venues. “These events are meant to encourage fellowship, fun, fitness, and healthy active living.” said Catherine.

This is Catherine’s 2nd year as a summer student with Sault Senior Services, and she is hoping for a good turn-out for the activities planned. Both Seniors Centres are involved with the 29th Senior Games. The Steelton Centre and Bay St. will host activities all week long.

“The Kick-Off BBQ is a time for everyone to come down, enjoy some food and register for games they may want to be involved with.”

“Every day this week there are activities planned, with the Senior Games wrapping up at 5:00 pm on Friday.” said Mallinger.

“We’ll be spending the week indoors and outdoors, depending on the game organized, and the weather.” she said. “We award our first and second place participants with prizes after each game, and of course, there is food available.”

20160606_121143There is certainly something for everyone from card games to carpet bowling to washer toss to pickle ball. New this year, is ping-pong at Steelton Seniors Centre on Friday afternoon.

20160606_121308In June each year, Ontario celebrates and recognizes the contributions seniors make to our communities. 2016 marks the 32nd anniversary of Seniors’ Month in Ontario. To recognize the important role seniors play in our communities, this year’s theme is, “Seniors Making a Difference.”
