The Special Committee on Pay Equity tabled their report, entitled It’s Time to Act, in the House of Commons on Thursday.
“Canada’s current pay equity regime is antiquated, and does not adequately ensure that women and men receive equal pay for work of equal value. Yesterday’s report gives the Government of Canada clear direction on how to implement a new pay equity regime that is proactive and that recognizes pay equity as a Human Right,” stated Sheehan.
The Committee’s final report cites 31 recommendations which will have a significant impact on Canadians and gender equality in Canada.
Some of the key recommendations in the report include:
- Repeal of the Public Sector Equitable Compensation Act (PSECA);
- Establishment of federal, proactive Pay Equity legislation that recognizes pay equity as a human right.
- Creation of a distinct Pay Equity Commission and Pay Equity Tribunal
- Adoption of a majority of the recommendations of the 2004 Federal Pay Equity Task Force report
“The report will guide the government in making significant progress on an extremely important issue. It matters to our daughters, to our friends, and to all the women who work hard every day to provide for their families,” concluded Sheehan.
