‘Leafs by Snoop’. A Brand Logo the Toronto Maple Leafs aren’t buying

The iconic Rapper, Movie, Television & YouTube star Snoop Dogg has a bit of a fight on his hands. The fight could be won or lost in a United States Court hearing, visa vie, The United States Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO).  The USPTO is the federal government agency for granting U.S. patents and registering trademarks.

The buzz about Snoop Dog and why MLSE has sprung into action, is all about a Brand & a Logo.  Snoop Dog, also known as Calvin Broadus Jr. is a serious investor and U.S. entrepreneur in the legalized marijuana business. He has a line of ‘leaf’ that he introduced to customers as, ‘Leafs by Snoop’ in November 2015 in Colorado.

In a recent ,TSN interview, (tsn.ca) sports broadcaster Rick Westhead stated that in November (2015), Snoop Dogg filed a trademark for his cannabis brand ‘Leafs by Snoop’.

LeafsbySnoop&TMLMLSE isn’t amused that Snoop Dogg’s trademark logo, (in their estimation) for ‘Leafs by Snoop’ (LBS) bears a resemblance to the Toronto Maple Leaf’s hockey team logo. The word ‘Leafs’ is also up for debate. Documents have recently been filed by The Toronto Maple Leafs (NHL) parent company, Maple Leafs Sports & Entertainment (MLSE) asking for ‘sober second thought’ on the LBS trademark.

Toronto Maple Leafs Sports & Entertainment got wind of the logo branding, and subsequently filed documents (June 8th, 2016) at the U.S. Trademark and Patents Offices in Alexandria, Virginia requesting a 90 day review of the trademark, which was granted. MLSE  have asked for the time to review and potentially make a case that the Toronto Maple Leafs team logo could be irreparably harmed and create general confusion in the market place.

The ‘Leafs by Snoop’ logo features those three words, LBS, in white lettering over top of a gold coloured leaf. There are 7 distinct points to the gold coloured leaf, while the Maple Leafs hockey team logo has 31 points on a blue coloured leaf with white lettering.

‘Wherever my musical journey has taken me around the world, it’s beautiful to see how chronic leafs are a common source of peace, love and soul that connects us all.  I’ve always been proud of our movement and have personally selected my favorite strains to enjoy. Leafs by Snoop is my way of sharing the experience I have with the finest quality cannabis one could imagine. Let’s medicate, elevate, and put it in the air!’  Snoop Dog.
