Update: Severe Weather Watch in effect

Environment Canada has issued a weather watch for Sault Ste. Marie and portions of the District of Algoma.

UPDATE: 9:51PM Environment Canada has lifted the Severe Thunderstorm Watch for the area.

When it rains, it pours…unsettled conditions have led to a severe thunderstorm watch for the immediate area. Environment Canada issued this watch Friday.

Severe thunderstorm watch in effect for:

Sault Ste. Marie – St. Joseph Island
Searchmont – Montreal River Harbour – Batchawana Bay
Conditions are favourable for the development of dangerous thunderstorms that may be capable of producing damaging wind gusts, damaging hail and torrential rain.

Thunderstorms which have developed in upper Michigan state are expected to track eastwards and could impact the Sault Ste Marie area early this afternoon. A few of these thunderstorms will have the potential to produce severe weather.

Very large hail can damage property, break windows, dent vehicles and cause serious injury. Very strong wind gusts can damage buildings, down trees and blow large vehicles off the road. Remember, severe thunderstorms can produce tornadoes. Heavy downpours can cause flash floods and water pooling on roads.

Severe thunderstorm watches are issued when atmospheric conditions are favourable for the development of thunderstorms that could produce one or more of the following: large hail, damaging winds, torrential rainfall.

The Office of the Fire Marshal and Emergency Management recommends that you take cover immediately if threatening weather approaches.
