Tips to Beat the Heat!

Warm and humid air is forecast to push into northeastern Ontario tomorrow, with high temperatures expected to last until Saturday, cooling off on Sunday. Algoma Public Health would like to remind the public to follow our tips to help beat the heat.

Please remember these tips throughout the summer when we are experiencing hot humid weather.

“Exposure to extreme heat and humidity can lead to illnesses such as heat exhaustion and heat stroke,” explains Jon Bouma, Program Manager with Algoma Public Health “Those most at risk for developing heat-related illnesses include the very young, the old, the chronically ill and people who exercise or are involved in demanding work outdoors for prolonged periods.”

Heat-related illnesses are preventable. Remember to use common sense and follow these tips to beat the heat.

  • Avoid going out in the sun from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m.
  • If you are in the sun, wear a hat (wide-brimmed if possible).
  • Wear sunscreen.
  • Wear loose, lightweight clothing.
  • Spend some time in air-conditioned places such as a shopping mall.
  • Take frequent cool showers or baths.
  • Drink plenty of water. Avoid alcoholic beverages, coffee and cola.
  • Cook during the coolest times of the day.
  • Reschedule sport practices, exercising, etc.

In addition, visit adults who are at higher risk of a heat illness at least twice a day. Infants and children also need frequent watching for signs of a heat-related illness.
