1st Annual Bike for Kids

Algoma Family Services (AFS) Foundation is inviting the community to participate in the 1st Annual Bike for Kids on Saturday, September 17th. Bike for Kids is a community bike ride open to all ages and experience levels that aims to raise awareness and funding for children and youth mental health programs in Sault Ste. Marie and surrounding area. Participants can register online at afsfoundation.ca/events/.

Individuals can choose from 5 km, 25 km or 50 km distances. The cost to register is $10 for those 16 and under and $35 for anyone over the age of 16. Participants are encouraged to raise pledges in addition to their registration fee. Prizes will be awarded for the top three fundraisers as well as the top male and female finishers in both the 25 km and 50 km rides and the top three finishers (16 & under) in the 5 km ride.

This event is an important development to reduce the stigma surrounding child and youth mental health and create awareness of the services that are available in our community for those experiencing mental health challenges. So far in 2016, a total of 1602 clients have utilizes the services at AFS but there are still another 378 individuals that are waiting for service for a variety of mental health related reasons. Bringing awareness to the need for children and youth mental health services is essential to reducing wait times and creating accessibility to mental health programs and services locally.
