Community pulls through for Braydin

Life hasn’t been that easy for 4 and half-month-old Braydin Borden. The infant son of Amanda and Ryan Borden was born with major heart defects that were not noticed originally.  “the doctors, Dr. Burrows of the Sault and Dr. Zufelt found his condition after he’d been looked at for months with no findings”, Amanda Borden tells SaultOnline.

image4It wasn’t until Braydin suffered heart failure shortly after he was born that his condition was diagnosed and it’s a long list.   Congenitally Corrected Transposition of the Great Arteries, a congenital heart defect where the ventricles are switched so that the left ventricle pumps blood to the lungs, and the right ventricle pumps blood out the aorta. In this defect, the position of the two ventricles are reversed so that the right atrium enters the left ventricle, and the left atrium enters the right ventricle. Another defect, Ventricular Septal Defect, where normally blood entering the right side of the heart stays on the right side (this is low-oxygen blood), and blood on the left side of the heart stays on the left side (this is oxygen-rich blood) which is then pumped to the rest of the body. When a defect or “hole” is present between the ventricles (or lower chambers), blood from the left side of the heart is forced through the defect to the right side every time the heart beats. It then goes back to the lungs even though it is already rich in oxygen. Because of this, blood that is not yet oxygen-rich can’t get to the lungs.

It doesn’t stop there, Atrial Septal Defect (ASD) / Pulmonary Stenosis (PS) ASD is the sinus venosus defect, located in the superior portion of the atrial septum and typically associated with abnormal drainage of the right upper pulmonary vein and Pulmonary Stenosis (PS) Pulmonary stenosis is a narrowing of the pulmonary valve. Normally the pulmonary valve opens to let low-oxygen blood flow from the right ventricle to the lungs where the blood is oxygenated. Because of the narrowing, the right ventricle has to pump harder to get past the stenotic valve.

Braydin under went surgery in July, “He did get a double switch and a hole repair at sick kids by Dr. Glen Van Arsdell.” Borden says, “He will need maintenance with his surgery and with this surgery his heart at 15 years will drop to 70 percent strength from 100. Once his body grows to adult size (15 years old plus) and starts heart failure again, it will be easier to find a heart transplant when it will be needed.”

The family has a long road ahead of them and since Ryan is self-employed with no coverage, the bills are already piling up. Ryan owns and operates Pidges Car Care on Great Northern Road.

A benefit dinner was held this past Monday with some help from Lee and Ken Goodship, Braydin’s uncles who operate Grand Gardens North. Lee offered to shave his head if someone offered up a $500 donation. Nice new look Lee!

Karen Gauthier, Braydin’s Grand Mother, was overwhelmed with the support for the family by the community.

A cheque for $5,000 was donated by her employer TruNor. “All I could say was wow!”, stated Gauthier. “We raised $15,000 in total and it’s amazing what this community has done.”

A GoFundMe account has been set up on behalf of the family for those who missed the dinner or just want to donate to the cause. You can access it HERE
