Search continues for missing male in Haviland Bay


At approximately 5:15 pm on August 4, 2016 Sault Ste. Marie Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) received a 911 call regarding an overturned boat in Haviland Bay on Lake Superior.

There were two males on a boat that overturned. One male made it to shore.  The other male is still missing.

Sault Ste. Marie OPP Marine Unit is on scene.  The OPP Helicopter has been deployed and is enroute to the area.   The Canadian Coast Guard Auxiliary Search and Rescue Unit has also been deployed and is enroute. Also assisting in the search are Goulais Fire and Rescue and Sault Search and Rescue.

First Report

SaultOnline has received  three reports of accidents North of the Sault.

The first is an accident involving a small SUV  and a pickup truck towing a trailer near Batchewana on Highway 17. Sources say that the northbound lane is currently closed and emergency responders are on scene.

There has also been a report of a rollover of an ATV at Pancake Bay. The driver of that vehicle is reportedly okay.

Another incident is a  report of a boat which has capsized and sunk approximately a mile off  shore in Haviland Bay. Emergency responders are reported to also be on scene.
