A man who faces a second degree murder charge in connection with the death of Calgary Stampeder Mylan Hicks appears in court today. Nelson Tony Lugela, 19, was arrested earlier this week. Hicks, 23, was shot and killed early Sunday after what police describe as an altercation involving several people inside a Calgary nightclub.

The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge will spend the last full day of their tour of Western Canada on Haida Gwaii, the archipelago off the northern coast of B.C. The islands are renowned for First Nations totem poles, ancient rainforests and salmon fishing. Prince William and Kate start their day in a canoe with Haida warrior paddlers, then officially open a new hospital and visit a heritage centre and museum. The royal family cap off their week-long tour in Victoria on Saturday.

Brad Marchand’s short-handed goal was the game-winner as Canada scored a 2-1 victory over Team Europe to win a second straight World Cup of Hockey crown. The Canadians took the best-of-3 final in two games. Canadian superstar Sidney Crosby was voted MVP of the tournament, with a World Cup-high 10 points, just three months after winning his second Stanley Cup.
