The Sault Ste. Marie Innovation Centre (SSMIC) Board of Directors has appointed Don MacLennan, SSMIC’s Manager of Finance and Administration, to the role of interim Executive Director effective today, October 11.

As interim Executive Director, MacLennan will primarily take on operational duties and continue to manage the financial and administrative aspects of SSMIC. He will perform these duties until a permanent replacement for Tom Vair, SSMIC’s Executive Director of eleven years, is hired. Effective today, Vair has moved on to a new role as Deputy Chief Administrative Officer with the City of Sault Ste. Marie.

“Don is a trusted leader and strong advisor, well versed in SSMIC business priorities, projects and operational developments,” said Chris Wray, SSMIC Board Chair. “The Board will be initiating a robust recruitment strategy to find a permanent replacement for the role to ensure that SSMIC continues to build and actively develop an innovative science and tech hub in Sault Ste. Marie and area, led by the best person possible for the job.”

As Manager of Finance and Administration, Don is responsible for all accounting, financial and general administrative duties to support the organization and he is very familiar with organizational projects. He is also experienced as one of the key liaison representatives between the Board of Directors and Innovation Centre staff.

All SSMIC divisions, services and projects will operate as usual during the interim and transitional period.
