The SSM Lions Club is celebrating 80 years of honouring their motto “We Serve”. Lions Rose Day began in 1959 and 57 years later it still continues. In the seventies and eighties the club ran various bingos to support their community service. In 1983 they began a long term partnership with the City of Sault Ste. Marie to operate Pointe Des Chenes Family RV Park. Lions Place Non Profit Housing for Seniors on Bay Street continues to live on as a hallmark of the SSM Lions Club.
The Club is very proud to have been able to donate in excess of $2.1 million to various organizations over the years including the Santa Claus Fund, Soup Kitchen, Drug Awareness Education, “Dreams Take Flight” Program, Canadian National Institute for the Blind (CNIB), Lions Foundation of Canada Dog Guides, to name a few.
“We were truly grateful during the New Hospital Campaign, that the Lions Club of Algoma in District A5 chose the Argon Laser in the Ophthalmology Department as a project to support. With the assistance of Lions Club International Foundation, they raised over $100,000! Currently, they continue to support the Hospital Foundation in purchasing equipment required to advance healthcare in our community” Cheryl Pavoni, Executive Director, Sault Area Hospital Foundation.
