The Algoma Thunderbirds will be in the tough this weekend as they take on the Carleton Ravens and Ottawa GeeGees in their home openers this Friday and Saturday at the George Leach Centre.
On the women’s side, Algoma will look to continue their shooting from last Saturday, where they shot 90 per cent from the charity stripe, 52 per cent from outside, and 47 per cent from inside. Algoma will need to tighten their defense to stop the fast break of the Ravens and GeeGees. Last season, Carleton posted a 14-5 record, while Ottawa was crowned OUA silver medalists with 17-2 stretch.
Competition for the men will be equally stiffening. With one win under their belt, Algoma will have to dominate the boards early to prevent the defending U Sports Champions from running up the score. Last season, Carleton earned their sixth straight U Sports Championship title and Ottawa earned the OUA bronze medal.
Both Carleton and Ottawa will open their seasons against the Tbirds.
Those in attendance will also be able to work on their game and have a chance to win $1,000 in prize money both days. Fans will have a chance to make a series of shots, finishing with a half-court shot, in order to claim the top prize. Contests will be at half-time at the men’s game on Friday and half-time at the women’s on Saturday.
Prizes will also be awarded for super fan and best poster. Thunderbird Hide and Seek Trivia will also be played.
Game times are 6:00pm (women) and 8:00pm (men) on both days.
