From November 19 – 26, YMCA Peace Week invites people of all ages to reflect on peace, to talk, and to take action, individually and with others.

A special highlight of this week is the presentation of YMCA Peace Medals to individuals or groups who, without any special resources, demonstrate a commitment to the values of PEACE through contributions made within their local, national or global community.

Peacemakers are recognized for promoting and inspiring Participation, Empathy, Advocacy, Community and Empowerment.

This years’ ceremony will honour St. Andrews United Church and their Friends of Refugees group.  They have made significant contributions towards peace-building by bringing the community together to sponsor a Syrian refugee family.

The ceremony will be held at Sault Ste. Marie YMCA auditorium at the Multicultural Potluck from 5:00 pm to 6:00 pm on Monday, November 21, 2016.

Registration is available at the Sault Ste. Marie YMCA front desk.

“The recipient of the YMCA Peace Medal is a tremendous inspiration and they show how any one of us can improve the quality of life in our local, national or global community.  They exemplify the values of YMCA Peace Week and the positive impact people can make,” says Kim Caruso, CEO of the Sault Ste. Marie YMCA.

Additional YMCA Peace Week activities at the YMCA of Sault Ste. Marie include:

  • The Giving Tree in the YMCA of Sault Ste. Marie Lobby
  • Walk in the Shoes of Someone Else Social Media Event

Since 1987, more than 1,500 individuals and groups across Canada have been recognized YMCA Peace Medal recipients.
