2016 Medal of Merit goes to Ella Jean Richter


The Sault Ste. Marie Medal of Merit Selection Committee is pleased to announce Ella Jean Richter as the recipient of the 2016 Medal of Merit in recognition of her outstanding contributions to the community in both her professional and volunteer capacities.

In her position as Regional Director, Community and Aboriginal Relations with Bell Canada, Ms. Richter served communities from the Ontario/Manitoba border to Peterborough. She chaired and sponsored events such as the Bell Celebrity Skate and Youth Action summer employment initiatives.

Ella Jean has received the Bell Canada HERO award for outstanding service, Rotarian of the Year; and the Chamber of Commerce ATHENA award as an exceptional female role model.
Ms. Richter is an exceptional leader, mentor and community champion. She has taken an active role in many of the organizations that make Sault Ste. Marie a great place to live, learn, work and play, including: Northern Ontario Heritage Fund Corporation; PUC Distribution Inc.; Rotary North; Sault College Board of Governors; Group Health Centre Trust Fund; Ted Nolan Foundation; Sault Ste. Marie Chamber of Commerce; and Hospitality and Travel Sault Ste. Marie.

Ella Jean is a great promoter of Sault Ste. Marie. She has worked tirelessly behind the scenes in support of local business and organizations. Her strategic planning and business development advice has been invaluable to the expansion and improvement of services for the people of Sault Ste Marie and area.

The City of Sault Ste. Marie awards the Medal of Merit annually to persons or groups in recognition of outstanding achievement in the areas of athletics, culture or academics, or those who have made outstanding contributions to the community.
