The Algoma Thunderbirds will be in Southern Ontario this weekend for their final pair of games before a five-week break in their regular season.
On Friday, both teams will take on the red and white York Lions in Toronto. Both Algoma teams have never defeated the Lions in their past four meetings. The York women are 0-4 while the men are 2-2.
“These will be the final games before we break for Christmas and we are looking to get back into the win column this weekend,” said men’s Head Coach Thomas Cory. “Both teams this weekend are coming off tough road games where York lost a tough one verse Lakehead and Queen’s erased a 27-point lead to come back to defeat Lakehead. We will need to compete the entire 40 minutes and not have a few minute lapses because both teams will capitalize on our mistakes.”
Competition will heat up on Saturday as the Thunderbirds travel to Kingston to take on the Queen’s Gaels. The women are currently sitting with a perfect 5-0 record, ranked 6 in the nation, while the men are 4-1.
“Going into both our games this weekend we need to focus on rebounding and ball movement,” said women’s Head Coach Ryan Vetrie. “We play two tough teams and have to be mentally tough for the longest road trip of the season. We have played well this first half but we need to be able to close a game out and in order to do that we need to stay focused for 40 minutes.”
Both Algoma teams are 1-6 in the OUA West.

Game times are 6:00pm (women) and 8:00pm (men) on both days.
