Former nationally ranked and now retired local speed skater Gary Trembinski is strapping on the speed skates again for two January competitions.
“I’m very excited to officially announce that I have made the decision to skate at the Ontario Provincial Championships and the Michigan State Championships,” Trembinski said via his Facebook page Monday evening.
The competitions, both held in January, are in Ottawa, Ontario and Petoskey, Michigan respectively. The Ottawa meet is scheduled for January 14th and 15th, 2017, while Petoskey’s meet will be held on January, 28th, 2017
“Now, don’t call it a comeback,” Trembinski warns. Gary is currently taking his real estate courses and will be joining his cousins, Kristen and Rob Trembinski at EXIT Realty Lake Superior.
Trembinski retired from the sport at 26th in Canada in May 2016 and says, “it was only a matter of time until I had the opportunity to compete again. I’m very excited to have this opportunity and I can’t wait to strap the long blades back on.”
Training wise, Trembinski admits he has been slacking in the gym. “I think I’m starting to realize how tough it is to keep yourself physically in shape when you’re not an athlete. I’ve got about three weeks before provincials and the crash course program has started.”
Trembinski says that he’ll be happy just to compete again. “It’s going to be fun, but, I also don’t like losing.”
