Former T-Bird commits to Otters

With past graduates Nick Sicoly (Guelph Storm), Boris Katchouk (Soo Greyhounds), Mario Culina (Windsor Spitfires), Medric Mercier (Oshawa Generals), Darian Pion (Sudbury Wolves), Drake Pilon (Sudbury Wolves) and Nolan Makkonen (Guelph Storm) all playing in the Ontario Hockey League, it appears that another former T-Bird is heading in that direction.

It was announced today that former Soo Thunderbirds defenceman Owen Headrick has committed to the Ontario Hockey League’s Erie Otters.

Headrick, who spent his past two seasons with the WCHA’s Lake Superior State Lakers hockey club, scored 7 times and set up 20 others through 63 career games along with collecting 28 penalty minutes.

The Garden River, Ontario product, who was selected by the Erie Otters in the 14th round (261st overall) during the 2013 Ontario Hockey League Priority Selection, came over to the T-Birds in the 2013-2014 season, putting up 31 points through 56 regular season games and was named both the team’s and league’s Rookie of the Year.

After committing to the Lake State Lakers following his rookie season, Headrick returned to the T-Birds for his second season in 2014-2015, putting up 13 points through 13 regular season games.

In 2014-2015, Headrick also helped the Soo Thunderbirds to winning their third Copeland Cup McNamara Trophy in franchise history and was named the NOJHL’s playoff MVP, leading all defencemen in postseason points (20).

Headrick, who became the T-Birds all time leader for most career playoff goals (14) and points (33), amongst defencemen. He also helped the Soo capture its second Dudley Hewitt Cup title in franchise history during 2015, and was named the tournament’s Most Sportsmanlike Player.

Marie, Ontario native has worked as an Athletics Assistant in the Sault College Athletics Department during his final year of school in 2011.
