The Sault Ste. Marie Innovation Centre (SSMIC) is pleased to announce the launch of a Community Energy Learning Series (CELs) led by its Energy Innovation Hub.
The Sault Ste. Marie Energy Innovation Hub, a division of the Sault Ste. Marie Innovation Centre, intends to engage members of the community around energy education through reoccurring presentations each focused on different high priority topics specific to energy in Sault Ste. Marie.
The Community Energy Learning Series (CELs) will kick off on February 1, 2017. The objective is to increase the availability of “Energy Education” within the community based on industry facts and trends while also reducing electricity consumption and CO2 emissions through efforts in energy efficiency, conservation and the adoption of new energy technologies. Every two weeks there will be different topics covered, with five sessions in total. All sessions are free and open to the public, and will include a presentation along with plenty of opportunities to ask questions.
The following CELs sessions will take place from 7-8pm at the Sault Ste. Marie Innovation Centre, 1520 Queen St. E. (Algoma University campus, Convergence Centre building):
Understanding What Goes into the Cost of Electricity – Wednesday, February 1
This presentation is geared toward the general public and people who desire a greater understanding of what goes into their electricity bill, while discussing both government and consumer forces impacting the cost of electricity.
How to Use Less Energy and Save Money – Wednesday, February 15
The residential cost of electricity has risen more than 70% in past decade. This session will teach homeowners and businesses how to save energy and money.
Understanding Your Own Renewable Energy Opportunity – Wednesday, March 1
This presentation discusses how homeowners and businesses can benefit from renewable energy. The cost of renewable energy has reduced dramatically over the last five years and this session will teach you how to utilize government programs to increase benefits.
Energy Sustainability for Businesses – Wednesday, March 15
In partnership with the Sault Ste. Marie Chamber of Commerce, SSMIC will discuss energy sustainability opportunities for small and medium sized businesses. This presentation increases your ability as a business to operate more sustainably. This session is designed for businesses, companies and organizations.
Sault Ste. Marie as the Alternative Energy Capital of North America – Wednesday, March 29
Learn how Sault Ste. Marie has become the Alternative Energy Capital of North America and how you can benefit and be a part of this transition.
Sessions will be facilitated by SSMIC’s Smart Energy Business Strategist Kieran O’Neill; a local energy advocate who holds certifications in Energy Auditing and Solar PV Installation as well as experience in a number of energy businesses and in depth teaching experience. Kieran has spent his career entrenched Sault Ste. Marie’s energy sector and is available to present to community groups, education institutions, and company groups on various energy topics by request. All presentations will be made available to the public through the SSMIC website following the CELs session.
The Energy Innovation Hub at the Sault Ste. Marie Innovation Centre (SSMIC) was established in 2014 in an effort to position Sault Ste. Marie as a leader and to drive growth in the regional energy sector. SSMIC’s objectives for Smart Energy are to support the creation of new energy jobs and companies in the community and to communicate, educate, promote and empower the community at large on the importance and benefits of energy planning.
