Oscar & Dario salon owner Monic Cuengros along with Courtney Hedley, Jamie-Lynn Van Schooneveld and Laura Harten brought their tools of the trade to the church basement, and set up a barber shop. The razors started humming around 7:00 pm and kept going for well over an hour.

dsc00476Christopher Maltais, scout leader, started the challenge three years ago. “The first year, we started with nine people, then last year we went up to twenty six, and at last count we are up to 31 people this year.”

While Maltais was in the barbers’ chair, another name got added to the list, and the final count was 32.

Five scouts and cubs troops participated. #20 St. Paul’s, #19 Korah West, #1 Bar River, #21 East Side, and #11 Westminster.

dsc00439For Maltais and others, the head shave challenge is about showing support for people currently going through cancer treatment, as well as a way to honour and remember people, including in the scout movement, whose lives have been taken by cancer.

Alex Kakeeway-Boyer participated for the second time. “I care about people who are suffering from cancer. One of my family members died from cancer and it makes me feel upset when people are hurting.” he said.

Scout leader Steven Mullins shared “It’s a good opportunity for us to explain to the children and youth about cancer and how it affects people.  We have lost a couple of members in our organization over the last few years, and it touches all of us.”

Lori McDonald, Community Fundraising Specialist for the Canadian Cancer Society was in attendance to cheer everyone on, and share information on cancer prevention.
