Going into its sixth year, there is a new twist to the very popular Ski the Trails in support of the Sault Area Hospital Foundation (SAHF). The event is in partnership with the Soo Finnish Nordic Ski Club and presented by Scotiabank. Come on out Sunday, February 26th! This year participants are asked to gather pledges, support our local healthcare and ski, snowshoe or fat bike over 500kms collectively! All proceeds help purchase medical equipment for our community Hospital.
All participants are encouraged to raise their pledges and then hit the trails at Hiawatha Highlands to accomplish as many KMs as they can. Participation starts at 8am. Registration closes at 11am but participants can tally their final KMs and meet at the Water Tower Inn for the post event gathering. Here we will tally the KMs travelled and if we beat our goal, we will set a new goal for the upcoming year! Special to this year, Fat Bike enthusiasts will be happy to know that they can take on both the Crystal Creek, and for this day only, the Red Pine System!
Co-chairs Drs. Curran and Dopp established this event in 2011 to help support the SAHF. In its first five years, the event has raised over $85,000! Every year, our community successfully supports the purchase of medical equipment at Sault Area Hospital. For example, in 2015-2016 our community’s support throughout the year led to the purchase of $639,452.00 worth of medical equipment. This medical equipment would not be available without our community’s support. Our community’s healthcare professionals rely on the best medical equipment to deliver excellent care locally.
Registration and pledge collecting for the event can be completed online. Participants and donors can reach the site by visiting www.sahfoundation.com/ski. Participants can register as an individual, team or family (two adults and no limit on number of children) and share with friends, family, through social media and email to reach their fundraising goal. Individuals are asked to raise a minimum of $50 each. The site has the ability to receipt donations instantly through email. All participants will have a chance at some great prizes!
Scotiabank is the presenting sponsor of this event and will be matching pledges collected up to a total of $5,000. Registration and pledge forms (paper copies) can be picked up at either of the local branch locations, as well as at Hiawatha Highlands or the SAHF office. Scotiabank staff will be on site totaling online and offline pledges, registering participants and preparing everyone to take on the trails.
From Noon – 2pm, there will be a Ski the Trails pancake breakfast at the Water Tower Inn sponsored by Anthony Pucci – RBC Wealth Management. All participants will receive a breakfast along with a day pass to the Club Cabana for free. This will allow participants to relax, enjoy the sauna, hot tub and pool, after a long morning on the trails. Pancake breakfast for non-participants are as follows: Adult – $15 and Kids (under 12) – $10.
