Thunderbirds Shoot for a Cure this Friday

Varsity Sport Coordinator, Rachel Johnson cutting her hair for Locks of Love in 2014

The Algoma Thunderbirds basketball teams will be donning pink on Friday, February 3rd in their annual Shoot for the Cure, Cancer Awareness basketball games, sponsored by the Algoma University Alumni Council. This year, the Algoma Thunderbirds Varsity Athletics Program has an ambitious goal of raising $10,000 in support of the Canadian Cancer Society.

The Cancer Awareness basketball games are part of U Sports’ (formerly the CIS) annual Shoot for the Cure event, which aims to raise funds and awareness for breast cancer research through the Canadian Breast Cancer Foundation. Now in its 11th year, the Shoot for the Cure campaign has raised over one million dollars in donations! Last season, a cheque for $98,775.90 was presented to the Canadian Breast Cancer Foundation and an additional $25,836.86 was amassed by universities that elected to donate their fundraised moneys to local or provincial organizations. This year, for the sixth season in a row, all 47 U Sport basketball teams will be taking part in the fight against cancer.

Gate proceeds from Friday evening’s games will be donated to the Canadian Cancer Society. At half-time of the men’s game, Varsity Sports Coordinator Rachel Johnson, as well as current students Stephanie Jennings and Sabrina Boros, will be cutting and donating their hair to Locks of Love. The haircut has been generously donated by Casey Barry of The Hair Emporium. Chuck-a-ball will also occur at half-time. Donations are welcome, with all proceeds going to the Canadian Cancer Society. The first 200 people through the gates will receive a free t-shirt.

Fans are also encouraged to donate online at the Algoma Thunderbirds’ Canadian Cancer Society webpage.

The women take to the court at 6:00pm followed by the men at 8:00pm. Competition will be tough in the Western Mustangs.
