National Reading Month Celebrations at HSCDSB

March is National Reading Month in Canada, and to celebrate, the Huron-Superior Catholic District School Board’s (HSCDSB) Reading Recovery and Learning Commons Team will host three nights of literacy activities for the board’s students and families in the gymnasium of the Mount St. Joseph Centre (MSJC).

“This is a great program that has been put together to encourage reading, literacy and parental involvement.  It is crucial that parents read to, and with, their children, to see first-hand how their children are progressing in their reading and literacy,” said HSCDSB Director of Education, John Stadnyk.

To kick off Reading Month, the board will begin with a Camp Out for Literacy night on March 7, from 6:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m.  This fun night will have students from Kindergarten to Grade 3 share a read aloud from a guest speaker and their favourite books with friends and families.  Participants are invited to bring a sleeping bag or blanket and a flashlight.

“Having families and friends join together in this event reinforces the joy of reading and community involvement.  We are excited to showcase our Learning Commons programs, books and technology with hands on activities,” said HSCDSB System Teacher Librarian, Roberta Chiarello.

On the next night, the board will celebrate five wonderful years of Reading Recovery.  All past and present Reading Recovery students and their families are invited to attend this literacy event on March 8 from 6:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m.  Participants are invited to come and listen to a local author share her story and read their favourite books with family and friends.

“Children participating in the Reading Recovery intervention have made remarkable gains in reading and writing.  As teachers, we also get to see their self-esteem increase on a daily basis.  We are looking forward to celebrating these early literacy achievements with the parents and students,” said HSCDSB Reading Recovery Teacher Lead, Amanda McCabe.

The final chapter of literacy nights takes place on March 28 at the Mount from 6:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. Grade 4 to 6 students are invited to a Beach Party with a Book to celebrate literacy and the arrival of spring.  Local authors will be on hand to read their favourite books.

Parents of HSCDSB students are encouraged to join in any one of these events.  Registration by phone or email is required. Participants are asked to provide their name, child’s grade, the number of people attending, and contact information.
