Day 1 of NOSSA curling being played at the Idylwylde Curling Club in Sudbury is complete. Two local boys teams, St. Marys and White Pines, are competing along with the girls team from Superior Heights, in the two day event.
St. Mary’s boys (Skip Nick Lemieux, Vice Jacob Reid, Second Andrew Berg, and Lead Taylor Longo) finished the day undefeated. In the morning game they defeated Franco Cite by a score of 7-3 and went on to defeat St. Charles 7-6. Their final game of the day was decided in an extra end when a nice draw by Lemiuex gave them a 6-5 victory over Central Algoma Secondary School. St. Mary’s will play in the semi-final game tomorrow against the winner of a game between Widdifield and Espanola.
The other local boys team representing Sault Ste. Marie, White Pines (Aaron Soulliere, Bryson Petingalo, Nicole Costello and Logan Sylvestre) split their day with one win and one loss. In the morning draw they lost to Central Algoma Secondary School by a score of 7-2 but went on to defeat Notre Dame College 11-3 later in the day. The White Pines boys are back on the ice Friday morning when they will play St. Charles. They will need a win to stay alive in the modified double-elimination bracket.
In the girls division, Superior Heights (Erin McLean, Catherine Mesich, Breanne Hamilton, and Madelaine Coutu) rallied from an early 4-1 deficit in their morning draw to defeat Widdifield Secondary School by a score of 7-4. In the afternoon they struggled to get points on the board and lost an 8-1 game to Lockerby. The Superior Heights girls will need a win against Sacre Coeur in the morning to stay alive.
Teams are playing for the right to represent NOSSA at the OFSAA curling championships being held March 22-25 in North Bay.
