Ready, Set, Race!! Come on Bar River! Go #11! Yeah #19! Nice #20! All right #21! On Saturday, April 8, starting at around 10:30a.m., Beaver Scouts and Cub Scouts from the Sault Ste. Marie area will be racing their Beaver Buggies and Kub Kars in the annual Kub Kar Rally.
Beaver Scouts race their buggies for practice to when they move up to Cubs when they get older. Cub Scouts races are timed with awards given out in the end. The five groups in the Algoma Country area which will participate include; 1st Bar River, #11 Westminster, #19 Korah West, #20 St. Paul’s and #21 Eastside. Races will take place in front of Sears in the Station Mall.
Cub Scouts is a program within Scouts Canada for boys and girls between the ages of 8 and 11. The Cub motto is “Do Your Best”, and a lot of activities within the program are based on this. Although the groups within the Algoma Country area operate independently from each other, many events are done with the youth participating together. Some of these events include: annual fall camp, an area Winter Fun Day, Head Shaving for World Cancer Day, and the end of the year Cuboree camp.
The Kub Kar Rally is an event that is held every Spring and is a highlight of the year for Cubs. Cubs begin working on their car at home and at weekly meetings. The Kub Kar kit comes in a box and starts as a rectangular block of wood with 4 wheels and 4 axles. The youth can shape the car however they want and then paint it. There are a few simple rules to follow and before the race, it is weighed. The maximum weight is 142 grams and as long as the car falls within the required weight limit, it is ready to compete. Awards are given out for 1st, 2nd and 3rd in two different divisions. Leaders and volunteers help to set up the track the night before, weigh in all the cars and judge the event.
If anyone is interested in joining Cub Scouts or volunteering to become a leader, feel free to drop by the Kub Kar Rally at the Station Mall on April 8, 2017 anytime between 10:00a.m. and 2:00p.m.. We will have a table set up with information on Scouting programs and experienced Scouters there to answer any questions.
