Sault Michigan store to close

Sault Ste. Marie Michigan is about to lose one of its oldest retail chains. JC Penny located at the cascade crossings is one of 138 stores to be closed in the U.S.

The company released the list of closures today citing the retail giant is losing market share to online shopping such as Amazon.

The Sault Michigan outlet was a draw for Canadian shoppers looking for discount department store goods.

“We believe closing stores will allow us to adjust our business to effectively compete against the growing threat of online retailers,” J.C. Penney CEO Marvin Ellison said in a statement last month. Other Michigan locations scheduled to close are in Escanaba, Holland, Houghton, Kingsford, Midland and Sault Ste. Marie.

The nation wide cost cutting and closures will affect up to 5,000 jobs.
