The Sault Tridents Underwater Hockey team enjoyed a weekend of success this past Saturday, March 18, 2017 in Guelph, Ontario competing in the 38th annual College Royale Underwater Hockey Tournament.  This is one of the larger tournaments in the province as well as North America, hosted by Guelph Flounders Underwater Hockey, and draws a number of highly competitive teams throughout various divisions.

The Sault Tridents went undefeated competing in the A division of the tournament.  The Tridents started with a sweep of the tournament’s favoured local Hamilton squad with a 5-0 win brought about by valuable goals from Matt Seto, Craig Zimmerman and Mehmet Icaral.

Next, the team faced off against the Canadian Under-23 team and managed to fare a 6-1 victory against this national team.  The College Royale tournament is an open tournament which at times will host various established teams that are preparing for national or international events.

The Sault Tridents finished out the main structure of the tournament with a 5-3 win over the Pittsburg Stingrays and a Montreal team before moving on to the finals.  Multiple goals from Kyle Farquhar and Colin Grimm aided in these wins.

In the final game, it was a hard fought battle with the Toronto Tentacles for the gold.  Even with Tridents’ forward Craig Zimmerman being called for four penalties resulting in 8 minutes of short handed play, the Sault managed to eke out a 2-1 win and claimed the gold banner.  Brian Armstrong was stellar on defence with the help of Dan Delparte and Kan Seto, while forwards Chris Costello and Jenn MacLeod both managed to score in the victory.  The tournament victory was a welcome surprise to the local squad as they were missing a couple of players for the event.

The Sault Tridents play Tuesday’s at the YMCA and Thursday’s at the John Rhodes pool; both at 9:00 pm.  Interested participants are always welcome.
