“What’s in a Name?” Local young professionals and entrepreneurs can now tell you

Nearly 80 local youth, entrepreneurs and business members attended yesterday’s ‘What’s in a Name?’ business branding workshop hosted by YouLaunch and the Sault Ste. Marie Innovation Centre.

“When you are naming a company you have the power to shape how people think. Seize this opportunity to set yourself apart,” said guest speaker Lynn Nichols, language naming and branding expert with X Intellectual Property and Harvard University in San Francisco Bay/Silicon Valley area.

Nichols spoke from her personal experience as a visionary for ideas and products, as well as advisor to incubators and startups with 25 years’ experience in research and teaching on practical and theoretical linguistics.

The workshop was free for youth 29 and under and open to anyone in the community looking to learn more about business branding and naming. Held at Grand Gardens Downtown, topics included how to build strong brand foundations, common naming pitfalls, understanding naming trends, how to properly brand an organization, the factors to consider when choosing a name, what a name means, and more. While in Sault Ste. Marie, Lynn also offered free consultations with local youth entrepreneurs, many of which are SSMIC and YouLaunch clients, sitting down with each for a one-on-one session.

“The purpose of this workshop was to offer local young professionals and entrepreneurs a chance to hear from a well-respected and accomplished linguistic expert that can help them make wise business decisions when it comes to branding and the language they use,” said Don MacLennan, Acting Executive Director at the Sault Ste. Marie Innovation Centre. “Networking and professional development opportunities are important for youth in in our community, and we appreciate Lynn’s eagerness to meet with local entrepreneurs.”
