Farmers’ Markets Welcome the Growing Season on June 3rd
Johnson Farmers’ Market began in 2007 as a small produce market in the town of Desbarats to serve the needs of the North Shore area. It has grown steadily each year since and now includes some of the best produce in the area. As well, the market provides home baking, canning, bread, cheese, meat, maple syrup products, alpaca products, meat, honey, eggs and much more. The operating dates and hours of the market are the first Saturday in June to the Saturday of the Thanksgiving weekend from 9:00 to 2:00 with shortened hours possible in the fall. This year, for July and August, the market will also be operating on a smaller basis, at the Bruce Mines water front on Wednesday from 5:00 to 8:00.
This season Paul and Sarah Martin and family will be offering certified organic produce from their farm on Desbarats Lake Road. Paul and Sarah have had their maple syrup production certified for a year and decided that they would go all the way to provide certified organic produce for customers.
Occasionally there is a concurrent event happening while the market is open. On the 2017 opening day of June 3 there will be a breakfast buffet in the arena as well as an expo of sustainability called the “Sustain Algoma Expo” where there will be displays by various groups such as Entomica with their amazing display of ‘bugs’, Natural Resources, Central Algoma Freshwater Coalition, Nottingham North Archery, face painting and so much more. For more info, visit www.sustainalgomaexpo.com
Other times throughout the summer there will be events such as “Strut Your Stuff” for artists and artisans and “Fibre to Fabric”. Several Saturdays will feature guest vendors with a variety of items such as sewing, jewelry, etc. Keep an eye on our Facebook page at ‘Johnson Farmers’ Market Desbarats’.
