SAULT STE. MARIE—Today, Ontario NDP Sault Ste. Marie byelection candidate Joe Krmpotich called on Liberal candidate Debbie Amaroso to speak out against her Liberal leader and call on Kathleen Wynne to immediately invest in the Ring of Fire.
“By failing to act on the Ring of Fire, Kathleen Wynne is jeopardizing the opportunity for millions of dollars of investment and thousands of jobs in our region,” said Krmpotich. “Sault Ste. Marie is poised to become the manufacturing hub for the development, but without interest and investment from the provincial government, we can’t even begin that conversation.”
While Sault Ste. Marie is shortlisted to be a host community for a potential $800-million investment that would bring at least 300 jobs to the Sault, the project is in limbo until the infrastructure is in place to unlock the chromite deposits in the Ring of Fire.
“This is people’s livelihoods and the future of our community — it’s an opportunity for young people to stay in the Sault,” said Krmpotich. “If Ms. Amaroso truly wants to see the Sault successful in its bid to host the smelter than she should join me in calling for the premier to get this moving, partner with First Nations Communities and finally act on the Ring of Fire.”
