Shortly after landing at the Sault Ste. Marie Airport Friday morning, Dr. Roberta Bondar was greeted at her plane with a bouquet of yellow roses and hugs by Sault Mayor Christian Provenzano and Sault Ste. Marie Airport Development Corp. Chair Jerry Dolcetti. She was then escorted into the terminal to a crowd of awaiting family, friends and media.
Returning home to partake in Canada 150 celebrations, Dr. Bondar was the focus of a ceremony where first the SSMADC dedicated the roadway into the airport as “Dr. Roberta Bondar Parkway” followed by Mayor Provenzano presenting her very own “Key to the City”.
An emotional Dr. Bondar had the opportunity to reminisce over the time she spent growing up in Sault Ste. Marie including her first solo flight at the Sault Ste. Marie Airport where she obtained her pilot’s license and the overwhelming homecoming she received shortly after returning from her space flight.
Dr. Roberta Bondar Receives Key to the City
The City of Sault Ste. Marie bestowed a very special honour today on Dr. Roberta Bondar who was presented the Key to the City to recognize her outstanding contributions to Sault Ste. Marie and worldwide. As the City’s honorary Canada 150 Ambassador, Dr. Bondar will be co-hosting Canada Day 150 on July 1st with Mayor Provenzano.
“The pride our City feels about Dr. Bondar’s accomplishments is undeniable,” states Mayor Provenzano, Sault Ste. Marie. “The citizens of Sault Ste. Marie remember welcoming you home on February 20th, 1992 shortly after your Space flight and today, in a most deserving way, we welcome you home again as our hometown hero. Thank you for all you have done for our community and our country and congratulations on your silver anniversary.”
The key to the City was presented to Dr. Bondar following an announcement by the Sault Ste. Marie Airport Development Corporation that the roadway off of the City’s Airport Road leading to the terminal building will be named Dr. Roberta Bondar Parkway. As Canada’s first woman in Space and the world’s first neurologist in Space, Saultite Dr. Bondar celebrates her 25th anniversary of the unique moment in Canadian history in the year of Canada’s 150.
Celebrated Canadian and local hero, Dr. Bondar will preside over Canada Day ceremonies with Mayor Provenzano at Roberta Bondar Park on July 1st, 2017. Airport Honours Doctor Roberta Bondar
The Board of Directors of the Sault Ste. Marie Airport Development Corporation marked the 25th anniversary of Doctor Roberta Bondar’s historic space flight by unveiling the Dr. Roberta Bondar Parkway at a special presentation in the Airport terminal this morning. The formerly unamed road is the longest on the Airport property and serves as the primary access to the Airport for over 210,000 travellers each year, as well as the hundreds of people employed by businesses and institutions at the Airport.
Doctor Bondar earned her Pilot’s License in her youth at the Sault Ste. Marie Airport. “Doctor Bondar was on the radar at the Sault Ste. Marie Airport several years before she was on NASA’s.” said Sault Ste. Marie Airport Development Corporation President and CEO, Terry Bos. “We were so excited to welcome her back to where it began to show her how proud we are of her accomplishments. Now visitors to the Airport will be reminded of the legacy she has left on our community, our country, and the world every time they drive down our entrance road.”
