Linda and Jerry take the cash

Algoma Family Services (AFS) congratulates Linda and Jerry Dottor on being the Algoma Family Services Foundation grand prize winner of $85,000! We congratulate all the draw winners and extend our great appreciation for each and every one that bought a ticket; as well a big thank you to Christie’s RV and Maitland Ford for sponsoring the truck and trailer package, and to all the staff and volunteers that sold tickets. Since its inception in 1994 the Algoma Family Services Foundation has provided over $750,000 in funding to AFS.

“With a 22% increase in demand for child and youth mental health services over the last five years, the additional funding provided by the Foundation has been critical in our ability to provide our services. I simply cannot imagine what we would do without this additional funding support”, Ali Juma, AFS CEO.

In the province of Ontario there are over 6500 children and youth who have been waiting for more than a year to receive child and youth mental health services. “In Algoma our wait times for service would be even longer if we did not have the financial support of the Foundation. At this point, it is a six to eight month wait time to receive a psychological assessment, although a long wait, this time has been reduced by half over the last three years thanks to Foundation funding”. Ali Juma, AFS CEO

According to Juma the shortfall in government funding has really challenged AFS in the provision of service and reducing wait times. “In the most recent provincial budget a significant investment was made in Pharmacare but an equal investment was not made in treatment for children and youth mental health. As such, the financial support by the Foundation makes up in part where government funding falls short”, said Juma.

Our children are our most precious resource. The great support for the Foundation is a reflection of the incredible Algoma community. Ways in which the community can continue its support of the Foundation include: participating in the Soo Mill Charity BBQ on June 10th from 11 AM to 2 PM at Soo Mill (539 Great Northern Rd) and the Golf Fore the Kids Charity Tournament on June 15th at Crimson Ridge. You can also donate directly to the Foundation.
