Local refugees giving back to the community

Tuesday is World Refugee Day and is being celebrated in Sault Ste. Marie. Refugee705 along with a group of newcomers will be giving back to the community by volunteering at the Soup Kitchen Community Centre on James Street.  Twenty refugees will be there from 9:30 a.m. – 1 p.m. helping to prepare the lunch, serve it and clean up afterwards.

Refugee705 board member, Dania Kuzbari, says “this is a great opportunity for the refugees to give back to the community that has given so much to them over the past 18 months. Everyone looks forward to helping out at the Soup Kitchen.”

Since the winter of 2015, the Sault has received approximately 130 refugees and the Sault Community Career Centre has engaged over 100 volunteers as part of the ‘adopt a family initiative’ to help them smoothly transition into a new life here in the community. Refugee705 is an award-winning Sault Ste. Marie-based grassroots non-profit organization which began in November of 2015 as a response to the global refugee crisis. Refugee705 raises awareness of how citizens can sponsor, donate and volunteer to help with the settlement of refugees in the Algoma District.
