Saturday July 8th marked the kickoff for the fundraising of not one, but two new house builds by Habitat for Humanity Sault Ste. Marie and Area. Habitat with the help of numerous community volunteers will construct the homes for families in need this year.
During the Kickoff Party, there were activities for the entire family. Children enjoyed face painting and a balloon artist who was on hand creating butterflies, turtles, caterpillars and many other unique characters. For the adults there were local vendors including Winnie B’s Vintage Emporium and a live local artist auction with items refabbed (made fabulous again) donated by local artists. Special guest Michael Peever was the designated auctioneer.
The food tent was a hit with fresh baking and assorted goodies, and the wonderful smell of BBQ’d hamburgers filled the air as we made our way inside the Restore. The store was a bustle of activity as people made their way through the isles taking advantage of the amazing deals happening during this one day event. The folks at Restore were offering and additional 25% off everything, that was on top of their regular pricing policy where after 2 weeks items are 25% off, after 4 weeks its 50% off… so with the extra 25% off, this means items are up to 75% OFF!!!!
The crowds gathered in much anticipation as the last ticket was purchased and placed in the raffle box for the 2017 Habitat for Humanity Huts for Homes Draw. A special thank you went out to Chris Beilhartz and the crew at Heritage Home Hardware for graciously donating the building materials for the 6 unique sheds that were on display.
The real talent came into play when the students from the Building Construction and Maintenance program took those materials and designed and constructed 6 masterpieces each unique in there own way. The program was a partnership with Ontario Works, Sault College, The Bushplane Heritage Centre and Habitat Sault Ste. Marie. Students of the program put over 10,700 hours into finishing home 8 & 9 with the Larouche and Wilkinson families! And now they have built 6 beautiful garden sheds to help raise money for Habitat’s next home build. Can you say “sore thumbs” “sore backs” 🙂
Exit Reality was Habitat for Humanity’s hero of the day with their generous offer to DOUBLE the donation with every ticket sold! Over $2000 was raised just today! Kristen Trembenski a real-estate agent from Exit was in attendance assisting in making people’s day as the winners of the Huts for Homes were drawn and called out.
