Who knew, but jokes actually have a national day and today is that day – no joke!
According to the website daysoftheyear.com August 16 is the day to celebrate laughter and good jokes.
Riddles were meant to strengthen the mind and help learn to puzzle things out on your own, but jokes came about as a way to laugh no matter where you were, no matter the reason so says the website.
To truly celebrate Tell a Joke Day, let us delve into what a joke actually is. Linguist Robert Hetzron used this definition, and it fits this perfectly:
“A joke is a short humorous piece of oral literature in which the funniness culminates in the final sentence, called the punchline… In fact, the main condition is that the tension should reach it’s highest level at the very end. No continuation relieving the tension should be added.”
You never do truly know where the next joke will come from, or what that joke will be, but Tell a Joke Day should be a riot of laughter for everyone involved!
So what’s your favourite joke? share it with us and put a smile on someone’s face today.
Leave your joke (try not be dirty okay?) in the comments section if you have one!
