Saultite’s Company Wins National Innovation Award in the United States

Professional Tool & Equipment News (PTEN) has announced its 2017 Innovation Awards, and Holland, Michigan-based Liberty Automotive Technologies (LAT) has been awarded an innovation award for its patent-pending IC-2 GDI fuel service system.  GDI is the acronym for gasoline direct injection which is the new dominant engine design for new vehicles that enables more power, higher fuel mileage and fewer emissions in a lighter engine design. Liberty Automotive Technologies is owned by Sault native Scott Irwin.  Mr. Irwin has set up a company, B&E Automotive Technologies to manufacture and distribute its products in Canada and export markets.

“This is amazing news for a new company like ours,” said Liberty founder Scott Irwin.  “PTEN Innovation is a big award in the automotive aftermarket business and we expect it to drive sales for us for the next couple of year.”  The judge comments from PTEN on the IC-2 were, “A unique approach to top end cleaning.  Alternating the solutions, pulsing the delivery of them, and safety features to minimize the possibility of damage are great features.  This tool looks like a great innovation to address a very real problem of valve deposits on direct injection vehicles.”

The company is in the process of looking for a partnership for a production facility in Sault Ste. Marie for the Canadian and export markets.  The company prefers to identify a partner with existing manufacturing facilities and capabilities and to have its Sault Ste. Marie production online in 2017.  The company will initially employ 3 in the Soo for machine assembly and the company expects to have 20 to 30 employees in the next 36 months.

The gasoline direct injection design moves the injectors from the air intake of the engine to directly injecting gasoline into the cylinders.  This creates a problem because the detergents in the fuel no longer are sprayed onto the intake valves to keep them clean.  A periodic cleaning service, like LAT’s IC-2 service every 18 to 24 months, would be needed to clean the intake valves and maintain the engine’s efficiency and power.
