Soo City United u13 Girls Bring Home the GOLD from Toronto at the Challenge Cup 2017
The Soo City United u13 Girls returned from Toronto with another Gold Medal. Backed once again by stellar defensive play, the Sault girls went undefeated in the round-robin and played their hearts out Sunday to win their second tournament of the season. Soo City United is the newly branded name for the previous rep soccer program known as Civics.
The team’s endurance was tested on Saturday as the girls hit the pitch for 4 games.
In Game one, Soo City United ended up with a hard fought 1-1 tie vs. Pickering. The Soo squad carried the play in the second half but couldn’t find the go-ahead goal. Gabby Baril scored the lone marker for the Soo.
Game two ended in another tie. This time it was a 0-0 draw against Fergus, and much like the first game, the Soo girls carried the game play, but a go-ahead goal evaded them.
Game 3 was a match against a very disciplined squad from Collingwood. The two previous ties set the stage for a “must win” scenario for the Soo squad to have a chance of advancing. The club responded with a solid performance and walked away with a 2-0 victory. Madelyn Clement and Remy Delorenzi scored the goals.
The stage for Game 4 was set and had the Soo square off against the only team to have defeated the squad this year, Belleville. The Soo girls, backed by great goaltending, disciplined defense and a relentless attack up front, came away with a 1-0 victory and the team’s third straight shut-out. Remy Delorenzi scored in the first minute of the game and it proved to be enough.
With this win and an undefeated round robin, the Soo girls advanced straight to the final game on Sunday and once again, ended up having to face the Belleville team.
Belleville opened up the scoring early in a very rugged affair, but the Soo’s Kassie Sartor responded soon thereafter to tie the game. Minutes later Bianca Spadafora netted a goal to give the Soo a 2-1 lead. Amy Dodson then added another marker to put the Soo club up 3-1. Belleville tallied their second goal of the game, with about 5 minutes left, to make for a very eventful high pressured last few minutes. When the dust settled, Soo City United secured a 3-2 victory and earned themselves another tournament championship!
Goaltending duties for the tournament were shared between Jasmine Morton and Taelyn Santos.
The Soo girls took home their second tournament championship in three attempts. They have pushed their season record to 27-1-9, giving up only 22 goals along the way. They have one tournament left.
