How the Sault claimed bragging rights for National Jumpstart campaign

For the first time ever, the Sault Ste. Marie Canadian Tire Store is number one in Canada when it comes to the money raised for the Canadian Tire Jumpstart program, and that’s a title owner David McClenahan wants to keep!

“100 percent of the funds distributed go directly to the community and all the money raised locally stays in the community”, McClenahan told SaultOnline Monday morning during a cheque presentation. The Jumpstart Charity donates $20,000 to the store that collected the most money for the program.

The money is raised through a variety of fundraising activities from car washes to BBQ’s events. “We were number 1 out of 490 stores across Canada and awarded the $20,000” McClenahan said.

McClenahan took over ownership of the local store about three years ago.

“Three years ago this store helped distribute approximately $25,000 and this has steadily grown, thanks to our valued staff and the people of Sault Ste. Marie, to more than $80,000 this year.  Our goal is to break the $100,000 mark in 2018.”, stated McClenahan.

Rogers Radio’s Lou-Anne Young talked to McClenahan live on radio Monday morning

The JumpStart program provides direct funding support to children in the Sault Ste. Marie area who would not otherwise be able to participate in sports and other related activities.  Every dollar donated goes directly to the children and every dollar stays local.

“There are about 7,000 kids in the Sault that need this help” McClenahan said.

The Sault Ste. Marie YMCA has been a tremendous supporter of this initiative and plays a critical role in making certain the children get the funding they need.

This fall JumpStart will be funding a new program in 4 areas of the city call “I Love to Move”.  Those interested can contact Kim Caruso at the YMCA or Christine Coutu at the Centre for Social Justice and Good Works to learn more.

Caruso said people can fill out an application online or grab a paper copy of the application for the Jumpstart Program at Canadian Tire or the YMCA.
