Local dealership working with six Sault Ste. Marie schools to collect non-perishable goods for food banks
For the fourth consecutive year, Maitland Ford Lincoln is teaming up with WE schools in Sault Ste. Marie to raise donations in support of local food banks through WE Scare Hunger, an action-based campaign to help end local hunger.
“Hunger continues to be an issue worldwide and we understand how difficult it is to end, but with the help of our community and schools, we hope to make an impact locally – ending hunger for as many families as possible right here in Sault Ste. Marie,” said Judith Kovala, dealership operations, Maitland Ford Lincoln. “The students of several WE schools in Sault Ste. Marie, will be running various activities within their schools to collect non-perishable food items until the end of October.”
The dealership is working with St. Mary’s College, Sault College Students’ Union, St. Mary’s French Immersion, Holy Family Catholic School, St. Paul’s Catholic School and Algoma University Students’ Union.
The Scare Hunger team is asking for the community’s support again this year. Students will be doing a paper bag drop to neighbourhood homes around their schools on October 23rd. Residents are encouraged to place non-perishable items in the bags, which will be picked up on October 25th. Items in high demand include canned meats, peanut butter, cereal, pasta/sauce, canned fruits and vegetables. Other items such as baby food and personal hygiene products are also gladly accepted.
Maitland Ford Lincoln (1124 Great Northern Rd.) would like to invite the community to drop off non-perishable food items to help fill the F-150 “Scare Hunger” truck in its showroom.
Residents are also invited to participate in several WE Scare Hunger food drives at Rome’s Independent Grocers (44 Great Northern Rd.) on October 18th and 19th from 3:00 to 8:00 p.m. and Pino’s Get Fresh Foods (219 Trunk Rd.) on October 21st and 28th from 10:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m.
It’s a huge project which involves the work of many students collecting, sorting and delivering food items to seven local food banks. Maitland Ford Lincoln and the students will load F-150s and deliver the items to St. Vincent’s, The Soup Kitchen, Salvation Army, Pauline’s Place, Women in Crisis, Sault College & Algoma University during the first week of November.
In 2016 over 8,000 items were donated to our local food banks.
