Second Annual Amazing Race Raises $ for Sault Ste. Marie YMCA’s Strong Kids Campaign


Six teams of enthusiastic people participated in the Sault Ste. Marie YMCA’s 2nd Annual Amazing Race On Saturday September 30th, 2017, and together raised a total of $2855.00 for the Sault Ste. Marie YMCA.

The one day event saw 21 people participating on 6 teams collecting clues and going though roadblocks, detours and intersections and even a U-turn, while completing different challenges at each location to get their next clue throughout Sault Ste. Marie businesses and area attractions. Racers began the day at the YMCA at 9 am and completed at 5 pm at the Canadian Upper Deck with a “Pit Stop” celebration for all teams and volunteers.

This entire event could have not been made possible if not for the establishments that participated as challenge locations throughout our fine city – Canadian Tire Gas Bar Carwash, Sault Ste. Marie Museum, Old Stone House, Pet Valu (2nd Line), Humane Society, City Police, Rome’s, Soup Kitchen, Algoma University, GFL Recycling, Winmar, Runway Park, and the Canadian Motor Hotel.

Gratitude and thanks to Rome’s for providing lunch for all involved and Canadian Tire for providing gift card prizes.

Extra special thanks to locations that truly embraced the event to make it so fun and those places are: Romes, Winmar, Pet Valu, Old Stone House, and Runway Park for creating challenges for the participants to complete at their locations.

The winning was Team Pita Pit consisting of Jason Murray, Jamie Schwarz, Christine Goertz and Cathy Schwarz, first year competing and congrats on your win!

The YMCA would also like to recognize the Top Fundraiser for a second year in a row Cindy Ougler, who raised $600 in pledges.

Kim Caruso, CEO of the YMCA, commented, “We are very pleased with the amount raised for Strong Kids.  Over $2800 in pledges will assist approximately 30 kids in attending day camps next summer.  Much thanks to the hard working volunteers that helped make this possible!  We hope to have more teams join us next year!”
