Dictionary.com has announced that complicit is their Word of the year for 2017.

Complicit ~adjective
Choosing to be involved in an illegal or questionable act, especially with others; having complicity.

The website explains the first spike in daily average lookups (+10,000%) for the word complicit was in March following a Saturday Night Live episode.

Scarlett Johansson played Ivanka Trump in a faux commercial promoting her new perfume Complicit. The tag line being “The fragrance for the woman who could stop all this, but won’t.”

The largest spike in lookups came a month later in April, when the real Ivanka Trump was interviewed by CBS regarding many accusations that she was complicit in her fathers messages and actions.

Ivanka pivoted away from the negative question, and her answer put a positive spin on the word. Needless to say that didn’t sit well with many.

So much so, the need to look up the definition of the word saw it’s biggest spike.
