Miller named assistant general manager

He graduated as a player from the Soo Thunderbirds in 2016, and now he’s back taking on a much different role!

It was announced today that the Soo Thunderbirds have hired 22 year old Joey Miller as the club’s assistant general manager.

Miller is coming over to the Thunderbirds after serving as an assistant coach with the NOBHL’s Soo Thunder during the 2016-2017 season.

“This is a really great opportunity to learn more about the game of hockey behind the scenes and I’m just really excited,” said Miller.

Miller, who was a former forward with the Thunderbirds from 2011-2016, scored 58 goals and 146 points through 189 games and helped lead the Thunderbirds capture Copeland Cup McNamara Trophies in 2015 & 2016 and helped them win the Dudley Hewitt Cup in 2015.

He also holds the Soo Thunderbirds record for most career playoff games played (56).

“Our main goal is to win the championship and win the league,” concluded Miller. ”

Matt had graduated from Sault College in the General Arts and Sciences program in 2011 and has been working in the sports field ever since. The Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario native has worked as an Athletics Assistant in the Sault College Athletics Department during his final year of school in 2011. After graduating, Stefano worked for two years at the George Leach Centre from 2011-2013 for the Algoma University Thunderbirds Varsity Basketball Games as an Athletics Assistant. From 2013 on, Stefano has been working as the Soo Thunderbirds communications person and has also been volunteering with Shaw TV Sault Ste. Marie since 2014, doing Soo Thunderbirds TV Segments.
