The Sault Ste. Marie Innovation Centre (SSMIC) has launched its new website at www.ssmic.com, along with a new name and brand identity for its Community Geomatics Centre (CGC) division. While still providing world-class geomatics, data and information management services across Canada, the Community Geomatics Centre is now known as Acorn Information Solutions (AIS), a division of SSMIC.
Information about SSMIC and its primary divisions, as well as organizational details, services, events, workshops, news, resources, career opportunities, contact information and more can be found at www.ssmic.com. The new website was designed by Envision Strategy + Design, and developed by Miramar Design Studio Inc., both of Sault Ste. Marie.

Marie and Algoma region. SSMIC’s mission is to drive business growth, facilitate research and commercialize innovation in globally significant areas of science and technology through partnerships, expert advice, community development, business incubation, youth outreach and sector development activities. “As a division of the Sault Ste. Marie Innovation Centre, Acorn Information Solutions is dedicated to promoting and establishing the means to share data, knowledge and tools among organizations to create healthier, safer and more prosperous communities,” said Don MacLennan, Acting Executive Director, SSMIC. “Our services and capabilities have grown substantially over the years, evolving beyond geomatics and geographically across Canada, so we wanted a refreshed name and look that resonates with clients and communities everywhere.”
Established in 2000 as the Community Geomatics Centre, what is now known as Acorn Information Solutions fueled growth and development of SSMIC, evolving into one of the most award-winning Municipal Geographic Information System (GIS) organizations in Canada and declared to be the most comprehensive GIS solution in the world. AIS is the first true information utility and the best example of leveraging public data for public good in North America. With over 20 staff that make up the AIS team, many are Certified GIS Professionals (GISP) with a breadth of expertise ranging from Software Analyst/Developers, to GIS Technicians and Analysts, and Database Administrator. AIS also oversees many projects and initiatives, including the Vulnerable Persons Registry.
“Our work is rooted in excellence, built on the strength of its data and experts, and a strong community partner invested in endless possibilities,” said Paul Beach, Manager, AIS. “Today’s information solutions will influence decisions that will impact current and future generations for the better.”
