Volunteers Needed For Two New Refugee Families

12

The Sault Community Career Centre (SCCC) is currently looking for  volunteers to help prepare for the arrival of 2 more refugee families to Sault Ste. Marie in the next couple of weeks with more to come in the months ahead.  The SCCC and its community of volunteers need two more groups immediately to participate in this rewarding work.

Since 2016, the SCCC has welcomed 105 refugees under the federal government’s Resettlement Assistance Program (RAP) and has also provided support services for 49 privately sponsored refugees.

The success of the settlement efforts can be attributed to the many volunteers who have provided a warm welcome, donated much-needed supplies like food and clothing, and offered additional services like transportation and language lessons. Through their involvement, the volunteers have helped create a supportive community around the newcomers that make them feel welcomed and connected.

As a volunteer, your role will be to provide friendship to the refugee families through their transition and offer assistance with the everyday tasks of life in Canada. You may help gather household items like towels and blankets, provide transportation to places like the grocery store or the bank, assist them with travel to medical and dental appointments, visit them in their homes, and accompany them to welcome events in the community.

The SCCC is looking for two groups of at least six volunteers for the upcoming arrivals. Orientation for volunteers will take place within the next week or two.  If you would like to register, or have any questions about volunteering, please contact Brenda Cooper at brenda.cooper@saultcareercentre.ca or call (705)542-9088.

  1. These people are obviously running for their lives !!! They are refugees , are you getting bombed out of your house , are your lives being threatened, is your city a war zone , do you have food , water and a roof over your head , really get over yourselves . Until you have lived that life then you have no idea what these families have been through or the horrors they have seen .

  2. I can’t believe the ignorance of these comments. Take a look at our Social Welfare System costs. People in our country are well taken care of. I just love the not in my back yard syndrome, you should be ashamed of yourselves.

  3. For every “refugee” we bring to North America the money can be used to help 13 “refugees” in their own area where there is no language and cultural barriers. This is virtue signalling at its finest. Do you want to help people or make yourself look virtuous?

  4. Please keep in mind a refugee is not the same as an immigrant. A refugee is fleeing for for their lives from their country because of war, and death squads and famine and horror. Condition’s unlike anything we will ever know. We were lucky to be born in a democracy like Canada. Just something to think about.

    • I understand fully , as a peace and conflict studies former student, I am well aware of the differences . However , this county can’t take care of its own citizens. How are we supposed to take care of ones from other countries ? 😞

    • I never said that that wasn’t the case. I’m just saying we can barely afford food on my table, due to lack of work, and a roof over our heads half the time, and we don’t live a rich life either, we haven’t got new clothes or shoes in awhile and my partner needs new shoes because of the job he has, and it’s pretty bad when 2 or 3 jobs can’t put food on the table but yet Canada can help others in bad situations more than their own. And then wonders why they are in deficits??? One) look who’s running the show? Two) where they think that cash cow comes from to help foreigners- whatever their situation is? And three) what about their own?? Now I’m not heartless but I’d help if I knew I’d be helped back in the same instance for helping these who our government is asking us to help, but guess what?? We don’t get the thank you for helping returned. It’s sad. United way won’t even help me out with my families struggles… so we suffer on our own… how disgusting is THAT!!!!! “Canadian government can’t help their own, but they sure can help others outside of Canada”
Pm wants them here, he should give up some cash cows of his own, and pony up a house that can house, feed, and clothe them!! That simple is all I’m saying tax payers dollars shouldn’t be going to that.

  5. We can’t afford to help our own but yet we have to struggle even more as a nation to take in more people we can’t truly help?? Are you joking me right now?? Trudeau give it a rest!!!
